Improving the health care mechanism for children with rare neurotransmitter diseases, developmental difficulties and chronic diseases, in the Preschool Institution "Radosno detinjstvo" Novi Sad

We are proud to share that Lil' Brave One successfully performed another advocacy initiative: Improving the health care mechanism for children with rare neurotransmitter diseases, developmental difficulties and chronic diseases, in the Preschool Institution "Radosno detinjstvo" Novi Sad.

All children have the right to grow up in an environment that stimulates their psychomotor development and prepares them for school, in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. For children with rare neurotransmitter and chronic diseases, it is necessary to ensure the preschool environment and health care protection, enabling the possibility of regular intake of life-necessary prescribed medications.

The project " Improving the health care mechanism for children with rare neurotransmitter diseases, developmental difficulties and chronic diseases, in the Preschool Institution Radosno detinjstvo Novi Sad" was done in 2022/2023 with the aim to contribute the improvement and development of policies towards the aforementioned sensitive groups of children.

We conducted a survey among parents (the main findings of the survey are available here), and then an analysis of public policy regulations in the field of preventive health care for children with rare neurotransmitter and chronic diseases (an analysis of regulations is available here). We held workshops from preschool institutions to universities, received support and involved a number of students as volunteers.

At the meetings with the decision makers, we discussed the challenges we face when enrolling children who take medications in preschool institutions and the requirements imposed on parents.

Based on everything, we made proposals for improvements, in the form of an initiative (you can download the initiative here).

What do we want?

We invite the director and employees of "Radosno detinjstvo" Novi Sad to improve preventive health care in the preschool institution, adjust internal rules and procedures and thus enable children with rare, neurotransmitter and chronic diseases to grow up with their peers, and enjoy safe and health childhood.

We are proud because our local initiative has been recognized as an example of good practice! In March 2023, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality - Brankica Janković initiated the Ministry of Health to adopt procedures for children and students with diabetes, chronic and rare diseases during their stay in preschool institutions and schools.
As stated in the Initiative, the goal is support, good control of the disease and prevention of its complications, which affects the improvement of the position of children and their protection from stigmatization and discrimination. You can read more here.
